President Mahama Signs Legal Education Reform Bill 2026 Into Law to Reshape Ghana’s Legal Education System
President John Dramani Mahama has officially signed the Legal Education Reform Bill 2026 into law, introducing major reforms expected to transform Ghana’s legal education system and create equal opportunities for aspiring lawyers across the country.
The signing ceremony took place at Jubilee House on Monday, May 11, where Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, described the legislation as a long-awaited reform designed to improve access to legal education in Ghana.
According to Dr Ayine, implementation of the Legal Education Reform Bill 2026 will begin immediately with the establishment of the Council for Legal Education, the body expected to supervise and regulate legal education nationwide.
He further disclosed that accreditation processes for law schools seeking approval to run professional law practice courses for LLB graduates preparing for the bar examination will begin later this year.
Dr Ayine also indicated that budgetary allocations for the implementation of the reforms are expected to be captured in the 2027 national budget to be presented to Parliament in November.
President Mahama, speaking after assenting to the bill, acknowledged that the legislation had been highly anticipated by many students and stakeholders within Ghana’s legal fraternity.
“It’s been signed,” the President stated.
