Police seize 500 cartons of Tramadol at Widana, Burkinabe arrested
The Upper East Regional Police Command has seized about 500 cartons of assorted brands of Tramadol in an intelligence-led operation at Widana, with one Burkinabe national arrested.
The operation was conducted on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, by personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) and the Operational Team, code-named “Black Cobra.”
According to the Police Command, the operation followed a month-long intelligence-gathering exercise into the activities of suspected drug dealers operating in the area.
Drugs seized from warehouse and residences
During the operation, the police recovered the suspected illicit drugs from a privately operated warehouse and some individual residences at Widana.
One suspect, identified as 21-year-old Abdul Ali, a Burkinabe national, was arrested and is assisting the police with investigations.
Preliminary intelligence gathered by the police suggests that the suspected network involved in the importation and distribution of the drugs includes foreign nationals from Mali, Togo, Burkina Faso and Senegal.
The police believe Widana is being used as a transit and distribution point for the suspected illicit drugs.
Investigations ongoing
The Upper East Regional Police Command has since commenced further investigations to identify and arrest other individuals allegedly connected to the network.
The police say efforts are ongoing to trace the source and intended distribution channels of the seized Tramadol.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to intelligence-led operations aimed at disrupting the trafficking and distribution of illicit drugs in the region.
