Finance Minister Hails Perseus Mining’s GH¢391m Dividend to the State

Perseus Mining (Ghana) Limited has presented a dividend of GH¢391,195,000.00 roughly US$35 million to the state. That’s a massive jump from the US$5 million the company paid the previous year.

Forson shared the news on his official Facebook page, framing it as a direct reflection of the company’s improved profitability. This strong increase reflects the company’s profitability, he said, speaking on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana.

Going from US$5 million to US$35 million isn’t a small bump it’s roughly a sevenfold increase. Much of that jump lines up with strong gold prices over the past year, which have significantly boosted earnings across the gold mining sector.

Forson used the moment to reinforce something he’s said before: Ghana, as a major gold producer, deserves a fair share of what the extractive sector generates especially when global commodity prices are running high.

He pointed to the sliding-scale system government introduced as the mechanism designed to make that happen. Under this system, the state’s share of mining revenue increases as companies’ earnings rise. That is why we introduced the sliding-scale system: when mining companies earn more, the people of Ghana must benefit more, he said.

This isn’t an isolated comment. It fits into a broader effort by the Mahama government to boost state revenue from mining, an issue that’s shown up repeatedly in recent budget statements and public discussions around reforming the sector.

For Minister Forson, dividends like Perseus Mining’s are proof the strategy is working a tangible sign that when gold companies do well, the state should see more of that benefit flow back to Ghana.
