Ghana is observing its National Sanitation Day on Saturday, October 3, 2026, with communities across the country taking part in a nationwide cleanup exercise.

The October exercise also forms part of Ghana’s national observance of World Cleanup Day 2026, according to the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

The initiative is aimed at encouraging communities, businesses and local authorities to take greater responsibility for environmental cleanliness.

Accra businesses directed to suspend operations

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has directed shops, markets and other commercial establishments within the metropolis to suspend operations between 6am and 12 noon on October 3 to allow businesses and residents to participate in the cleanup.

The directive was announced ahead of the National World Cleanup Day exercise.

The temporary closure is intended to enable commercial areas to participate in cleaning activities rather than continuing normal business operations during the exercise.

National Sanitation Day

The sanitation exercise comes amid continued concerns about waste management, drainage and environmental cleanliness in Ghana’s urban areas.

Poor waste disposal can contribute to blocked drains and increase the risk of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.

The timing of this month’s exercise is particularly notable following recent flooding in parts of the country, including Hohoe in the Volta Region.

Community participation encouraged

National sanitation exercises depend heavily on participation from local communities, businesses, assemblies and other institutions.

The October 3 exercise provides an opportunity for communities to clean public spaces, remove accumulated waste and draw attention to the importance of maintaining cleaner surroundings beyond a single designated cleanup day.

The Ministry’s announcement places the exercise within the broader World Cleanup Day campaign, giving the national initiative an international environmental dimension.

Beyond one-day cleanups

Environmental groups and local authorities have repeatedly emphasised that sustainable sanitation requires regular waste collection, appropriate disposal facilities and consistent enforcement of sanitation regulations.

The National Sanitation Day therefore forms part of a wider conversation about how Ghana can maintain cleaner communities throughout the year.

For residents and businesses participating on October 3, the exercise is both a practical cleanup initiative and an opportunity to promote greater awareness of environmental responsibility.
