Court Grants Techiman-Based Nurse Salomey Awiti Baffoe GHC100,000 Bail

After three weeks in police custody, Techiman-based nurse Salomey Awiti Baffoe, 40 years, has finally been granted bail. The Adenta Circuit Court set the amount at GHC100,000, with two sureties to be justified.

Awiti Baffoe has been charged with abetting the publication of false news, in connection with TikToker Ghana Jollof.

Her lawyers, led by Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, appeared in court on Monday, October 5, to make their case for release. Their central argument was simple she’d already spent three weeks in police custody awaiting trial.

This wasn’t the first time they’d tried either. It marked the third attempt at securing bail, following an earlier refusal by the Accra High Court back in September.

This time, though, the outcome was different. The prosecution, led by Dr Justice Srem-Sai, didn’t oppose the bail request. After hearing the submissions, presiding judge Angela Attachie granted Awiti Baffoe bail of GHC100,000 with two sureties to be justified, specifying that the sureties must be civil servants earning at least GHC3,000.

As part of the bail terms, Awiti Baffoe is required to report to police investigators once every two weeks at the Hesua Police Station. Her case has been adjourned to February 17, 2027 for continuation.

Baffour Awuah didn’t hide his relief after the ruling, speaking to the media about what had clearly been a difficult stretch. There couldn’t have been a better outcome for me than this… It’s been a very sad journey, a difficult moment that has had our skin getting encumbered in the game, he said.

There’s more to this story beyond the nurse’s case. Baffour Awuah’s own involvement in the proceedings hasn’t been straightforward. He was apprehended by an official of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at the forecourt of the Accra High Court while filing a bail application, after his client’s request had been refused at the Adenta Circuit Court.

Following an altercation with the officer at the High Court premises, he was arrested and detained by EOCO for two nights. The investigative body indicated at the time that he was under investigation over a matter involving SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Ltd.

Baffour Awuah was subsequently arraigned before the High Court on Saturday, October 3, facing multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit intentional dissipation of public funds, intentionally causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering. He has pleaded not guilty and is currently out on a GHC10 million bail with two sureties, without justification required.
