Accra Water Supply: East Legon, Madina, Adenta and Nearby Communities Face 24-Hour Water Interruption

Residents across several communities in the Greater Accra Region are being urged to store enough water ahead of a planned 24-hour shutdown of the Dodowa Booster Station as Ghana Water Ltd carries out scheduled maintenance aimed at improving service reliability.

ACCRA, Ghana — Thousands of residents across parts of Greater Accra are expected to experience a 24-hour interruption to their water supply on Thursday as Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) temporarily shuts down the Dodowa Booster Station to carry out scheduled maintenance works.

According to the state-owned utility, the maintenance exercise is intended to improve the efficiency, reliability and long-term sustainability of water distribution from the booster station. The shutdown will begin on Thursday, 9 July, and is expected to last for 24 hours.

Communities expected to be affected include East Legon, Adjiringanor, Ashaley Botwe, Madina, Adenta, Oyarifa, Frafraha, Agbogba, Haatso, Atomic, Ashongman, Dome, and Dodowa, as well as adjoining areas supplied by the Dodowa Booster Station.

GWL said customers in these communities may experience either reduced water pressure or a complete interruption in supply while engineers undertake the maintenance work.

The company has advised residents, businesses, schools and healthcare facilities within the affected areas to store sufficient water before the shutdown begins and to use available supplies carefully throughout the maintenance period.

In a statement, Ghana Water Ltd said engineers would work to complete the exercise within the scheduled timeframe and restore normal water supply immediately after the maintenance is completed.

The utility also apologised for the inconvenience, saying it appreciates the patience, understanding and cooperation of customers while the essential works are carried out.

The Dodowa Booster Station plays an important role in distributing treated water to rapidly growing residential communities across eastern parts of the capital. Areas such as East Legon, Madina and Adenta have experienced significant population growth over the past decade, increasing pressure on water infrastructure and making periodic maintenance necessary to maintain service reliability.

Water interruptions in Accra often prompt residents to rely on stored water, water tanker services and commercial vendors. Public health experts generally advise households to use clean containers with secure lids when storing drinking water for extended periods in order to reduce the risk of contamination.

Although the interruption is temporary, businesses that depend heavily on water—including restaurants, food vendors, salons, laundries and healthcare providers—may need to adjust operations during the maintenance window.

Residents are encouraged to monitor official updates from Ghana Water Ltd in case there are any changes to the maintenance schedule or the estimated restoration time.

The planned shutdown comes as Ghana continues efforts to improve urban water infrastructure amid increasing demand driven by population growth and expanding residential development across the Greater Accra Region.
