Kenya Eyes Chinese Investment in Broadband, Smart Cities and Digital Infrastructure

Kenya is seeking deeper cooperation with Chinese technology companies as it looks to expand broadband connectivity, develop smart cities and strengthen its wider digital economy.

The discussions took place between Kenya’s government and Guodong Network Communication Group, a Chinese technology company, as Nairobi explores potential investment and technology partnerships.

Principal Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy John Kipchumba Tanui received a delegation from the company led by its Chairperson, Lu Jie, to discuss possible areas of collaboration.

Kenya seeks investment in digital infrastructure

The talks focused on digital infrastructure, broadband connectivity, smart cities and the broader digital economy.

Kenya is particularly interested in partnerships that can bring investment, innovation and technical expertise into the country’s technology sector.

Tanui said expanding broadband access to underserved communities remains a priority as Kenya continues efforts to strengthen its digital infrastructure.

The government is also working to improve digital public services, with a focus on making them more accessible, efficient and centred on citizens.

Smart cities and Konza Technopolis

The discussions also explored opportunities linked to Konza Technopolis, Kenya’s flagship smart-city development.

The government is seeking to advance the development of digitally connected cities as part of its broader digital transformation agenda.

Potential technology partnerships could support infrastructure and systems needed to make cities more connected, efficient and digitally enabled.

Kenya also seeks Chinese clean-energy investment

Kenya’s interest in Chinese investment extends beyond digital infrastructure.

The country is also seeking Chinese investment in the local manufacturing of clean-energy equipment as it accelerates its transition towards renewable energy.

Kenyan officials have highlighted opportunities in areas including solar panel manufacturing, transformers, smart meters, transmission equipment and electric-vehicle charging infrastructure.

China’s expertise in renewable energy technologies, battery storage, smart grids, electricity transmission and large-scale manufacturing could support Kenya’s plans through local production and technology transfer.

The government is also seeking partnerships involving geothermal development, mini-grids, clean cooking, waste-to-energy projects and the digital management of electricity networks.

Investment could strengthen Kenya’s regional ambitions

Kenyan officials say Chinese investment could help create jobs, expand technical capacity and strengthen local supply chains while positioning the country as a manufacturing and distribution hub for East Africa.

The government also plans to modernize and expand its electricity transmission network by about 8,000 kilometres and add approximately 12,000 megavolt-amperes of transmission capacity by 2030.

These plans will require significant investment, technology and technical expertise, making international partnerships an important part of Kenya’s development strategy.

The latest discussions therefore reflect Kenya’s broader push to attract Chinese capital and expertise across both digital infrastructure and clean energy, while using technology investment to support long-term economic growth.
