Oman Urges Energy Sector to Show Real Impact, Not Just Announce Projects

Oman’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals has called on the country’s energy sector to focus on delivering measurable results rather than simply announcing new projects, stressing that transparency and public trust will be critical as the nation accelerates its energy transition and economic diversification.

Oman Energy Sector: Powerful Reforms Beyond Project Announcements Nukunya

Speaking at the Energy and Minerals Media Forum 2026 in Salalah, Under-Secretary Mohsin bin Hamad Al Hadhrami said citizens need clear information about how the country’s natural resources are managed and the real economic and social value they create. He emphasized that public confidence cannot be built through project announcements or performance statistics alone but through consistent communication and openness.

Public Trust Must Be Earned Through Transparency

Al Hadhrami explained that the ministry now considers public engagement an essential part of policymaking, viewing citizens as active partners in Oman’s development rather than passive observers.

He noted that providing accurate information and maintaining transparency would strengthen confidence in the country’s energy and minerals sector while helping the public better understand how national resources contribute to long-term prosperity.

Oman Expands Energy Investment Opportunities

The ministry also announced that it continues to expand the availability of oil, gas and mineral concession areas, including offshore exploration blocks, to attract high-quality international investment.

According to Al Hadhrami, the expansion is expected to:

  • Increase competition in the energy sector.
  • Improve the quality of geological and resource data.
  • Strengthen international partnerships.
  • Support renewable energy and green hydrogen projects.
  • Create more opportunities across exploration, production, logistics and technical services.

Energy Companies Highlight Technology and Sustainability

At the forum, executives from several of Oman’s leading energy companies outlined how technology and sustainability are shaping the industry’s future.

Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) Managing Director Dr. Aflah bin Said Al Hadhrami said modern exploration technologies are unlocking new opportunities even after decades of oil production. He added that investments in digital technologies, operational efficiency and local talent are helping reduce emissions while improving energy and water efficiency.

He also stressed that media coverage should extend beyond production figures to include local content, support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), workforce development and the advancement of Omani professionals into technical and leadership positions.

OQ and Nama Outline Long-Term Energy Strategy

OQ Group CEO Ashraf bin Hamad Al Mamari said investment decisions are based not only on commercial returns but also on their contribution to Oman’s economy, local supply chains and global competitiveness.

He noted that OQ’s integrated operations—from exploration and production to refining, petrochemicals and manufacturing—help maximize the value generated from the country’s natural resources while supporting employment and industrial growth.

Meanwhile, Nama Group CEO Ahmed bin Amer Al Mahrazi highlighted renewable energy as a key pillar of Oman’s future electricity system. He said expanding renewable power would improve energy security, diversify electricity generation and reduce reliance on a single energy source.

He added that the transition will require significant investment in electricity transmission, distribution infrastructure, energy storage and smart grid technologies, alongside greater public awareness of efficient energy and water consumption.

Mining Sector Seen as Key to Economic Diversification

Minerals Development Oman CEO Eng. Matar bin Salim Al Badi said the mining industry can play a much larger role in diversifying the national economy if mineral extraction is combined with local processing and manufacturing.

He explained that improving geological data would reduce investor risk while stronger connections between mining operations, ports, industrial zones and local businesses would generate wider economic opportunities for communities across Oman.

Energy Forum Focuses on Future Growth

The Energy and Minerals Media Forum 2026, held under the theme “Energy and Society: Partnership and Impact,” brought together government officials, industry leaders and media organizations to discuss investment, local content, sustainability, net-zero ambitions and carbon market regulations.

The event coincides with the Energy and Minerals Exhibition in Salalah, which runs until August 6 and features interactive displays showcasing the history of Oman’s energy sector, future investment opportunities and the country’s transition toward cleaner energy
