MTN MoMo Launches ‘Ride with MoMo’ to Drive Cashless Payments for Keke Riders in Ghana
Commercial tricycle (Keke) riders in Ghana can now receive fares digitally following the launch of MTN MobileMoney Limited’s “Ride with MoMo” initiative, a new programme designed to expand cashless payments and deepen financial inclusion across the country.
The initiative, launched in Ho in the Volta Region, aims to help commercial tricycle operators receive payments directly into their Mobile Money (MoMo) wallets, reducing the challenges associated with handling cash while improving financial record-keeping.
MTN MoMo Targets Cashless Transport Payments
Speaking at the launch on July 16, 2026, Mr Abdul-Majeed Rufai, Senior Manager for Business Development at MobileMoney Limited, said the initiative is intended to eliminate common cash-related challenges such as:
- Lack of change
- Counterfeit currency
- Payment disputes
- Loss of cash
According to him, every payment made through MoMo generates an instant SMS notification, allowing riders to monitor daily earnings and keep better financial records.
“There is no need to worry about change or counterfeit notes. Every payment comes with an SMS notification, making it easy to track your income and manage your business,” he said.
How “Ride with MoMo” Works
Under the programme, commercial tricycle riders can register as MoMo merchants using only their Ghana Card.
Once registered, riders receive branded merchant materials and can begin accepting digital payments from passengers through:
- Mobile Money transfers
- QR code payments
- Merchant payment services
Riders who are unable to register during community activation events can visit any MTN service centre to complete the process.
MTN Introduces Rewards for Active Riders
To encourage adoption, MobileMoney Limited has introduced a three-month promotional campaign.
Registered riders who:
- Complete at least 20 transactions per week, and
- Receive a minimum of GH¢1,000 in total weekly payments,
will qualify for weekly rewards including:
- GH¢500 cash
- 1GB of MTN data
The campaign is designed to motivate more transport operators to embrace digital payments.
Supporting Financial Inclusion in Ghana
Mr Peter Bimpeh, Senior Manager for General Trade South East at MTN Ghana, described commercial tricycle operators as an important part of Ghana’s transport network.
He said digital payment solutions would help riders receive money faster while improving the security of their daily earnings.
“People who keep Ghana moving deserve payment solutions that are equally efficient, secure and reliable.”
Mr Bimpeh added that the programme demonstrates successful collaboration between:
- MTN Ghana
- MobileMoney Limited
- Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS)
- Mahama Cando Association
- Other industry stakeholders
The partnership seeks to accelerate digital financial inclusion and encourage more small businesses to adopt electronic payment systems.
Keke Riders Welcome the Initiative
The Chairman of the UHAS Keke Riders Association, Mr Victor Adzah, praised the programme, saying it has already improved the way many riders manage their income.
According to him, receiving payments electronically makes it easier to save money because funds remain in the Mobile Money wallet instead of being spent immediately.
“When the money comes into the MoMo wallet, you think twice before spending it. It has helped me save more than when I handled cash.”
He also noted that digital payments eliminate the frequent challenge of passengers paying with large banknotes when riders have no change available.
Passengers can now simply scan a QR code or transfer funds directly to the rider’s MoMo account, making transactions quicker and more convenient.
Digital Payments Continue to Expand Across Ghana
The launch of Ride with MoMo forms part of MTN Ghana’s broader efforts to expand digital financial services beyond traditional merchants and into Ghana’s informal transport sector.
As Mobile Money adoption continues to grow nationwide, initiatives like Ride with MoMo could help improve financial inclusion, increase business efficiency for commercial riders, and support Ghana’s transition toward a more cashless economy.
