Sefwi Wiawso Assembly Resumes Work on Abandoned 25-Bed Maternity Block

After sitting untouched for roughly 14 years, a 25-bed maternity block at the Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Hospital in the Western North Region is finally nearing completion.

The maternity block was originally abandoned back in 2013. It’s only now getting the attention it needs, after the Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Assembly stepped in and took over the project as part of a broader push to complete stalled development work across the municipality.

Western North Regional Minister Wilbert Petty Brentum toured the facility as part of his inspection of ongoing projects in the municipality, and he didn’t hold back his praise for what’s been accomplished so far.

This is a state-of-the-art maternity block. It is about 25-bed capacity and very fit for purpose. What we see here can even serve as a regional maternity block, he said, commending both the Municipal Assembly and the contractor for the progress made.

The need for this new facility is real and pressing. The hospital’s current maternity block has only nine beds a figure that nurse manager Vera Esson Nyarko, speaking on behalf of the hospital, described as far from adequate given how many pregnant women come to the facility to deliver.

Our maternity block has a nine-bed capacity, which is woefully inadequate because we have many pregnant women coming here to deliver, she said.

For Nyarko, the new 25-bed facility can’t come soon enough. This 25-bed facility will go a long way to ease the pressure on the old block. Our patients will be more comfortable, and we also expect it to increase our clientele base, she added.

Brentum praised the Municipal Assembly, its technical team, and hospital management for working together to bring this long-abandoned project back on track. At the same time, he pressed the contractor to pick up the pace on whatever work remains.

The contractor has given assurances that the remaining work will be wrapped up within a month. Brentum said he plans to return to the site with the same group of stakeholders for the official commissioning once construction is complete.

Once finished, the new maternity block is expected to significantly boost the hospital’s capacity to provide maternal healthcare, taking real pressure off the existing nine-bed facility.

For women in Sefwi Wiawso and nearby communities, that translates into something tangible more space, better comfort, and improved conditions for mothers and their babies during one of the most important moments in their lives.
