Government Prepares Ground for New 400-Bed Mother and Child Block at Korle Bu
Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu has confirmed that land preparation has begun for a modern 400-bed Mother and Child Block at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).
Sharing the update in a Facebook post on Monday, September 21, Kwakye Ofosu explained that this new block will eventually replace the hospital’s existing maternity unit. He framed it as part of President John Dramani Mahama’s broader push to invest in major health infrastructure across the country.
The scope of the project is genuinely comprehensive. According to Kwakye Ofosu, the block will house specialised obstetrics and gynaecology wards, labour and delivery suites, operating theatres, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a High Dependency Unit, and an Intensive Care Unit.
That’s just the clinical core, though. The facility is also set to include an IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, along with antenatal and postnatal clinics, fertility and reproductive health services, breastfeeding and family planning units, and a dedicated Emergency Obstetric Care Unit.
Kwakye Ofosu also detailed a range of supporting services planned for the block, including diagnostic imaging, laboratory and blood bank facilities, pharmacy services, and a Central Sterile Services Department. Physiotherapy and rehabilitation units are also part of the plan, alongside teaching, research, and conference facilities.
Taken together, the vision is to build a genuinely comprehensive centre for maternal, child, and reproductive healthcare at Korle Bu one that brings together treatment, research, and training all under one roof.
