Diaspora leaders and organisations prepare for Accra conference

Ghana is set to host an international diaspora gathering this week as the Sixth Region Diaspora Conference prepares to hold its 2026 Pan African Conference at the University of Ghana.

The conference is scheduled for October 6 to 9, 2026, at the African Studies Department of the University of Ghana in Accra.

The event will focus on the relationship between Africa and its global diaspora, with themes including repatriation, integration, youth empowerment, citizenship and sustainable diaspora direct investment.

Four days of discussions and activities

According to organisers, the main conference programme will take place on October 6 and 7, followed by tours and site visits on October 8 and 9.

The gathering is expected to bring together Pan-African scholars, civil society representatives, business leaders, innovators, youth representatives and diaspora organisations.

Organisers describe the conference as an opportunity to develop partnerships and discuss practical responses to challenges affecting African descendants and diaspora communities around the world.

Repatriation becomes a central theme

One of the major themes of the conference is repatriation — the process of people of African descent returning to Africa to live, work, invest or establish long-term connections.

Ghana has become an important destination for diaspora engagement, particularly through initiatives focused on investment, cultural reconnection, tourism, entrepreneurship and heritage.

The conference places repatriation alongside citizenship and economic participation, reflecting a broader discussion about how diaspora communities can establish stronger institutional relationships with African countries.

Diaspora investment also on the agenda

Investment is another major component of the conference.

Diaspora direct investment can take several forms, including business ownership, property development, technology ventures, agricultural projects, professional services and partnerships with Ghanaian companies.

Organisers say sustainable diaspora direct investment will form part of the discussions as participants explore ways to strengthen economic connections between communities abroad and institutions on the continent.

Youth participation

The conference also places emphasis on young people.

The organisers have identified youth empowerment as part of their broader agenda, highlighting the importance of younger generations in maintaining connections between Africa and the global diaspora.

For younger Ghanaians and Africans born or raised abroad, such initiatives can create opportunities for cultural engagement, networking, education and entrepreneurship.

Why the conference matters to Ghana

The gathering comes at a time when Ghana is seeking to deepen engagement with its global diaspora beyond traditional remittance flows.

The country’s overseas communities represent significant professional, educational and entrepreneurial networks.

Conferences such as the Sixth Region gathering provide an opportunity for those networks to connect with institutions and organisations in Ghana while discussing practical areas of cooperation.

The event is therefore expected to place diaspora participation, investment and repatriation firmly on the agenda in Accra this week.
