A new organisation aimed at mobilising the expertise, investment, innovation and international networks of Ghanaians living abroad has been launched in Washington, D.C., opening a new channel for diaspora participation in Ghana’s development.

Region17Gh was formally launched on July 30, 2026, with the organisation describing itself as a platform designed to connect Ghanaian professionals, entrepreneurs, investors and communities abroad with national development opportunities.

The initiative is positioning the Ghanaian diaspora as a long-term development partner rather than focusing only on remittances. According to information released about the launch, Region17Gh intends to promote collaboration across business, government, academia, civil society and professional networks.

Diaspora expertise seen as a national resource

The launch brought together business leaders, entrepreneurs, professionals, policymakers, members of the diplomatic community and development partners.

Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, was named Lifetime Patron of the organisation. He said the diaspora had an important role to play in Ghana’s transformation and described the initiative as a mechanism for strengthening engagement with Ghanaians living outside the country.

Region17Gh Executive Director Maabena Ohene-Kena Webb said the organisation would focus on trust, transparency, collaboration and measurable impact.

The organisation has linked its identity to the description of the Ghanaian diaspora as the country’s “17th Region”, reflecting the idea that Ghanaians living abroad form an important constituency in the country’s economic and social development.

Investment and professional networks

The organisation’s launch comes as Ghana continues to seek greater participation from its overseas citizens in investment, entrepreneurship, technology, professional services and knowledge transfer.

For Ghanaian professionals abroad, structured networks can provide opportunities to contribute without necessarily relocating permanently. Such engagement can include mentoring, investment partnerships, research collaboration, technology transfer and support for businesses operating in Ghana.

Region17Gh is registered in the United States as a 501(c)(3) organisation, according to information released following its launch.

Why the diaspora matters to Ghana

Ghanaians living abroad contribute to the country through remittances, investment, professional expertise, philanthropy and international networks.

The broader challenge is turning these individual contributions into coordinated and sustainable development partnerships.

Region17Gh says it intends to help create that structure by connecting people and resources across borders.

For Ghanaian communities in the United States and elsewhere, the initiative could also provide another avenue for professional and entrepreneurial collaboration with organisations in Ghana.

A growing focus on diaspora engagement

The launch adds to a wider push to strengthen Ghana’s relationship with its global diaspora.

Beyond financial transfers, the country has increasingly focused on attracting skills, technology, investment and international connections from Ghanaians abroad.

Region17Gh’s launch therefore represents another development in the evolving relationship between Ghana and its citizens overseas.
