Ghana Auctioneers Association Calls for Probe into Unauthorised Auctions

The Ghana Auctioneers Association has called on the Ministry of the Interior and other relevant regulatory authorities to investigate and clamp down on what it describes as the growing use of unauthorised auction procedures across the country.

The Association says some individuals and institutions are allegedly bypassing established auction procedures by using unauthorised letters and engaging people who are not licensed auctioneers.

According to the Association, the practice undermines the work of licensed auctioneers, breaches established procedures and could deprive the state of significant revenue.

Association Demands Enforcement

The new President of the Ghana Auctioneers Association, Ebenezer Nii Oti Ankrah, is calling for stronger enforcement to ensure that all auction processes comply with the relevant laws and regulatory requirements.

He said government agencies and other institutions must respect contracts awarded through due process and should not allow unauthorised persons or offices to interfere with legally established auction arrangements.

“We call on government, the Chief of Staff, and Interior Ministry to launch a comprehensive investigation into the growing practice of using purportedly unauthorised letters to circumvent established auction procedures,” he said.

Mr Ankrah stressed that no individual or office should be allowed to override contracts legally awarded to licensed auctioneers.

He argued that protecting established auction procedures was necessary to maintain confidence in the profession and promote transparency in the disposal of goods and properties.

Association Raises Revenue Concerns

The Association also warned that bypassing lawful auction procedures could have implications for government revenue.

“When auction processes are infiltrated, the state loses revenue. Public trust erodes. We demand the directors of state institutions respect mandate issued through due process,” Mr Ankrah said.

He called on the relevant authorities to ensure that institutions follow the appropriate procedures when disposing of state assets and other properties through auction.

Concerns Over Diplomatic Vehicle Auctions

Mr Ankrah also raised concerns about the auctioning of vehicles by some diplomatic missions and international organisations.

He called for such transactions to be subjected to the appropriate legal and regulatory processes and urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to examine the matter.

He argued that applicable duties and other obligations associated with such vehicles should be properly addressed before they are sold in Ghana.

“The right things must be done. We will chase government to act,” he said.

The Association believes stronger enforcement of auction regulations would protect licensed auctioneers while improving transparency, accountability and revenue mobilisation.

Meanwhile, new national executives have been elected to lead the Ghana Auctioneers Association and represent the interests of licensed auctioneers across the country.
