Asante Kotoko Begin Post-Tinkler Era With Win Over Karela United

Asante Kotoko’s first league match since Eric Tinkler’s exit couldn’t have gone much better. The Porcupine Warriors edged Karela United 1-0 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday, marking their Matchday 5 clash with a result that will have brought real relief in Kumasi.

It didn’t take long for Kotoko to find the breakthrough. Isaac Opoku Agyemang struck inside just four minutes, reacting quickly to break the deadlock and give Kotoko the early lead they badly needed.

This was also Kotoko’s first game since Tinkler departed the club, following last weekend’s 2-0 defeat to Aduana FC a result that added extra pressure on this fixture to steady the ship.

The Porcupine Warriors came into the match looking to bounce back after a rough patch, having failed to win either of their previous two league outings a loss to the Ogya Boys followed by a 1-1 draw against FC Samartex 1996.

With the lead in hand, Kotoko kept pushing for more. Eric Gbetta drove a dangerous run down the left in the 13th minute before cutting inside and firing just wide, while Patrick Asiedu later won a free kick in a promising position. Karela, meanwhile, struggled to create much in the first half, their best chance coming from a 43rd-minute corner that Richard Boadu cleared away from danger.

Karela came out after the break looking for an equaliser, but Kotoko stayed disciplined at the back. Abu Adams made a crucial tackle in the 54th minute to snuff out one promising Karela attack, while Kotoko continued hunting for a second goal of their own to put the game to bed.

The home side made several tactical changes as the match wore on, bringing on Hubert Gyau and Abu Adams at the interval, with further substitutions following as they worked to protect their slender lead.

In the end, Karela couldn’t find a way through, and Kotoko walked away with all three points and a clean sheet to show for it.

For Karela United, this result snaps what had been a positive run of form, having beaten Hearts of Oak 1-0 in Matchday 4. The Tamale-based side had arrived in Kumasi with two wins and two defeats from their opening four matches, hoping to continue building on that momentum.
