Six Students Arrested After Attack on Obuasi SHTS Headmaster as MUSEC Orders School Closure

The Obuasi Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) has ordered the immediate closure of Obuasi Secondary Technical School (SHTS) following a violent student riot that left the school’s headmaster critically injured and caused extensive damage to school property.

Six students have been arrested in connection with the incident, which authorities say was triggered by rumours that the headmaster had secretly buried an infant on the school premises.

The decision to close the school was taken after an emergency security meeting as authorities moved to restore order and begin investigations into the violence.

Headmaster Sustains Serious Injuries

The headmaster, Abdullai Zakaria, sustained severe head injuries after he was allegedly attacked with cutlasses by a section of the students.

He was initially rushed to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital in Obuasi before being transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, where he is receiving specialist medical treatment.

Authorities have not provided an official update on his condition.

School Closed as Students Sent Home

Speaking on the Ghanakoma Morning Show on Akoma 87.9 FM in Kumasi, the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Faustilove Appiah Kannin, announced the school’s immediate closure following the emergency meeting.

She said a mandatory roll call was conducted before all students were sent home to allow security agencies to carry out a comprehensive investigation.

According to the MCE, calm has since been restored to both the school campus and the Obuasi community.

Riot Leaves Trail of Destruction

The violence reportedly resulted in widespread vandalism across the campus.

Authorities said students destroyed the headmaster’s private vehicle and caused significant damage to school property during the disturbance.

Heavy police personnel have since been deployed to the school to maintain security and prevent any further unrest. Academic activities have been suspended indefinitely pending the outcome of investigations.

Police Launch Comprehensive Investigation

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into the attack on the headmaster, the destruction of school property and the allegations that sparked the unrest.

Authorities have not confirmed the claims that the headmaster secretly buried an infant on the school premises, and investigations are ongoing to establish the facts.

Education and security officials are expected to announce the next steps regarding the reopening of the school after the investigations are concluded.
