9-Hour Downpour Submerges Parts of Hohoe, MP Urges Calm as Assessment Continues

Hohoe in the Volta Region is grappling with serious flood damage after a relentless nine-hour downpour hit the town on the night of Sunday, September 27, 2026, leaving hundreds of residents displaced and homes submerged in water.

The situation escalated when the River Dayi, unable to handle the sheer volume of rainfall, overflowed its banks. That overflow turned an already heavy downpour into widespread flooding across parts of the town.

Areas including Hohoe Zongo, Galikorfe, and the stretch from Kiki’s to Atabu Junction have been hit particularly hard, with floodwaters leaving several road stretches completely impassable.

Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, addressed the situation in a Facebook post, urging affected residents to stay calm while response efforts continue.

The severity of flooding in parts of Hohoe is a matter of serious concern. The situation has resulted in varying degrees of damage and loss, affecting homes, properties and the livelihoods of some residents. I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathy to all individuals and families who have suffered losses as a result of the recent floods, he wrote.

He acknowledged the very real distress the flooding has caused. I fully appreciate the difficulties and distress this situation has caused, and I encourage affected residents to remain calm as efforts are being intensified to address the situation, he added.

On the ground, the Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive, the Municipal Physical Planning Officer, engineers from the Assembly, and officers from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are currently working through affected areas, assessing damage and documenting the full extent of the impact.

According to Tsekpo, this assessment will shape what interventions come next, both to help residents recover from the immediate damage and to reduce the chances of something similar happening again.

Their assessment will inform further interventions and actions to mitigate the impact of flooding and help prevent a recurrence. Our thoughts are with all affected families during this difficult period, he said.
